Hugh Hood M.A. Entrance Scholarship
Direction des Relations Internationales de l'UdeM (Travel Fund for International Conferences)
Residents of Quebec may be eligible for financial aid under the government's programme of loans and bursaries or for the Bourses d'excellence offered by F.Q.R.S.C. (Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture). Ph.D. candidates who are residents of Canada may apply for fellowships offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council or the Canada Council. The deadlines are around early October. Students in their final undergraduate year should apply through their home universities. Outstanding Ph.D. students may receive from F.É.S. a supplemental grant of $2000 to $6000 per year (Bourse de doctorat de l'Université de Montréal). Application forms are available at the department. Some of these grants are awarded on an “early decision” basis (Bourse de doctorat de l'Université de Montréal - volet accéléré). Applicants who wish to be considered for this early decision must see that their complete applications arrive at the University by February 1.
The department administers a limited number of additional fellowships for Ph.D. students (bourse de l'entente). All applicants for full-time study whose applications are received by February 1 are automatically considered for these fellowships. All Ph.D. students who are Canadians or permanent residents do not pay out-of-province fees. The department offers a very limited number of assistantships and part-time teaching jobs to Ph.D. students in their second or third year, most often after completion of their course work and comprehensive exams.
Students from other countries may apply to their governments or to such bodies as the Commonwealth Association for fellowships. In addition, citizens of many foreign countries may be exempted from the foreign student tuition fees through programmes administered by their embassies. These countries include most of South America and many French-speaking countries. (See ‘Étudier à l’Université de Montréal’ ‘Guide du candidat étranger’ for further information).
Jennifer Toohy was awarded the Hugh Hood M.A. Entrance Scholarship of $3000 for 2009-2010. Matthew Halse and Haslam Bronwyn were awarded the Hugh Hood M.A. Entrance Scholarship for 2010-2011.
