Université de Montréal  Département d'études anglaises

The department offers competitive funding packages of up to $18,000 per annum for 3 years to as many incoming Ph.D. students as possible. For the fourth year of study, the university offers bursaries of $15,000 to full-time doctoral students who have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation and who, at the end of their third year, have a realistic work plan for submitting their thesis by the end of the fourth year. Internal funding packages are revised when students receive major external funding. The combined total of bursaries and internal funding packages cannot exceed $27,000.

The department offers teaching and research assistantships, as well as limited teaching appointments for students who have successfully passed their doctoral comprehensive exams.

For the strongest incoming M.A. student, the department offers the Hugh Hood Entrance Scholarship of $3000 each year.

Foreign students may apply for a bourse d’exemption des droits de scolarité that exempts them from paying foreign student fees.

Students who have finished all degree requirements other than the thesis pay substantially lower fees (under $400 per semester). A full-time Ph.D. student is usually registered at this reduced rate after two years and a full-time M.A. student, after one year.

The department is dedicated to the professional development of its graduate students. We encourage students to participate in national and international conferences and we collaborate with the Direction des relations internationals to secure student travel grants. To help students expand their professional networks, the department supports graduate students in organizing their own graduate student conference. Similarly, the department offers a number of academic lectures throughout the year and invites students to attend the lectures and meet with the speakers. We also offer a professionalisation seminar that prepares students for the academic job market, helps them complete their doctoral theses in a timely way, and builds a strong graduate student community.
